The Granite City Warriors did something on Friday at Lucco-Jackson Gymnasium they hadn't done since Feb. 11, 2011 - win. The Warriors snapped a 17 - game losing streak to the Edwardsville Tigers, beating them 50-47 on their turf. GCHS had lost 39 of 40 games to EHS entering Friday. Freddy Edwards swatted a Jalil Roundtree 3-pointer in the final seconds to secure the win. Granite City led 9-8 after one quarter, but had to overcome a 25-21 deficit at halftime. Edwardsville utilized an 11-0 run in the second quarter to take the lead. The Warriors benefited from their own 10-0 scoring spree in the third quarter, capped with a bucket by Zidane Moore, which included a foul. Unfortunately he missed the free throw. GCHS led 38-31 after three quarters. Davontay Mason paced the Warriors on Friday with 14 points. He scored 11 of them in the second half. He was the only Granite City player in double figures. Other scorers for GCHS were Justin Wiley with 9 points, Moore with 8, Christian Jones with 7, Edwards and Jerry Watson each with 5 and James Grote with 2. The Warriors improved to 6-2 with the win and won their fifth straight game. The Tigers dipped to 2-5 and lost their fourth straight. Next up for Granite City is a date with Carbondale at Memorial Gym at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 21.
